I first noticed this café when I was looking out for Bluebird Espresso the other week, as it was just next to the bus stop. While waiting for the bus to get to uni I popped in to have a look at the menu. I was told there wasn’t really a menu that day. The only things they had at that moment were coffee, cakes, brownies and pulled pork jaffles. The café opened about 4 months ago and I felt like I should support smaller cafés, especially since I’d...

Lectures finished early today so it was a good opportunity for us to have an early lunch. Stovetop is located within the Melbourne Graduate School of Education building, which must be very handy for those students. Since they serve breakfast all day I went for a lunch item (available after 11am): Brioche - Corned wagyu beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and seeded mustard in a toasted bun ($14). There were also some pastries, cakes, sandwiches and tarts available for eat-in or take away. I read that many people were disappointed by...

Today there was a last minute decision to have lunch at Green Refectory during our long uni break instead of eating on campus. It was pretty busy and we had to get a table outside, which wasn't ideal because of the rainy weather recently. I ordered the lamb cutlets (marinated and grilled, served on a pate of mash, with a rocket and chickpea salad, $13.50). Aside from what was...

Jacques Reymond will be closing down at the end of the year, so mum and I decided to celebrate both my parent’s birthdays and their wedding anniversary there. Set-up inside a mansion, the restaurant had a relaxed and homely feel. I specifically requested a booth seat for extra privacy and also one next to a window, which gave a nice view of the fountain. Being a house meant it had a number of different rooms, each with a slightly different ambience. Since it’s their last hurrah, it seemed fitting...

Bluebird Espresso was listed in Epicure as serving the best smashed avocado in Melbourne. Since it’s on the way to uni I thought I’d pop in to see how it was. The avocado pieces were quite large and more chopped than smashed, but I’m not fussy. At first glance, there didn’t seem to be heaps of avocado, but looks can be deceiving; when I spread it out over the lovely, crusty, tasty multigrain sourdough toast, there ended up being a layer of avocado ~2.5cm high. I’d say there was...
