Hooked is the brainchild of former DJ Ray Good (aka Sugar Ray), a British expat who grew up helping out at his uncle’s fish and chip shop. During his career as a DJ he got the idea for starting up healthy fish and chip restaurants and in 2006, he opened his first store in Chapel Street, then later started one in Fitzroy. The Hawthorn branch is the newest of the three, opening earlier this year. The store has gone with a maritime theme – bright whitewashed interior, old...

Le Rince-Doigts was a casual seafood place that was near our apartment. [caption id="attachment_5862" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Fish Soup, Croutons, Prawns, Bulot[/caption] [caption id="attachment_5864" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Salmon Tartare, Oysters; Prawns, Bulots, Bigorneaux[/caption] We started with the ‘After Work’, available only from 6-8pm, which was a glass of wine, some prawns and bulots (€5), the ‘Formule A Volonté’, which included fish soup, prawns, mussels, bulots, bigorneaux and salmon tartare (€20) and moules farcies (€5). The seafood was really fresh – given they also run a fish shop, I would hope it is –...

As well as offering its salmon products for sale and running cooking classes, the Tassal salmon store in Kew also has a small cafe attached. Today we both ordered from the specials board. I had Crispy Skinned Salmon with Steamed Asparagus and Mexican Salsa ($22) and A2 got Salmon Sashimi with Green Mango and Shoots ($17.50). The other specials on offer were a thai soup and char-grilled salmon with buttered potatoes and horseradish creme fraiche. As expected, the salmon in both dishes was very fresh. My salmon was beautifully cooked...

I finally got the opportunity to try a tuna steak! There was a popular stall selling yellowfin tuna steak but they didn't have any available. Our next option was to buy a steak from Peter's and get it cooked on-site. The tuna cost about $8 for 310g and the cost to cook them was $1.5 per 100g. This was probably cheaper than getting it from the other store. We bought some smoked eel (Japanese style) and fresh sashimi and seaweed salad from Claudio's. Claudio's only sold the sashimi...

After day 2 of the conference we decided to go out for dinner at this popular restaurant. I wasn't particularly hungry so I shared a seafood platter with a friend. It cost me $16 and wasn't as substantial as I expected, so I was a little disappointed. Taste-wise, the seafood was fresh. Another dish I considered was the pot of steamed mussels. The dish was quite tomato-ey and the mussels weren't that big, but I think it was better value than the Nautical Nibble Sharing Platter. There were...
