There aren't quite as many well-known cafes in Kew East compared to nearby Balwyn, but thankfully there are still some that exist. Fat Penguin Cafe is one of these. It's set up in what was once a house, and is larger than it appears from the outside. An outdoors courtyard is popular when the weather plays nice, the wooden communal tables and abounding greenery making it feel like a get-together with the neighbours in the backyard....

Saint Kilda recently welcomed in a new neighbour, Girl Next Door, who resides in the arty Tolarno Hotel on Fitzroy St. It's owned by Sylvan Spatarel and Benny Thompson, also co-owner of Sauced, and head chef Alex Thompson has previously worked under Gordon Ramsay....

Adam Pruckner, a Brunswick local and ex-Code black chef, has struck out on his own to open up his own place. Small Axe is co-owned with Jas Singh, and partner Kirstyn Tate. Previously a furniture store, there’s now an espresso bar, a courtyard on the side, and an open-air dining room towards the back. It’s homely inside the long and narrow building, much bigger than expected. Coffee is by Code Black of course....
