16 Dec Two Fat Monks, Fairfield
Two Fat Monks is now a year old, and has developed into one of Fairfield’s most popular eateries. It’s set within an expansive warehouse space, with various seating options arranged around the circular central bar. Despite its popularity, tables are not crammed in; it’s well-spaced, creating a sense of privacy for all diners.
The size of the site has allowed them to integrate an in-house bakery and coffee roaster. Pickling and preserving is done on site too. You’ll find more than just the usual brunch fare here. Their lunch menu kicks in from 12pm, though there are still a few brunch items that carry on through the day.
The Salmon Tartare has super fresh, house-cured Atlantic salmon, avocado, capers and quinoa. Squeeze some lemon over it and enjoy it with squares of lavosh. We inadvertently order the Chorizo Croquettes, when there are already croquettes with one of the mains (sans truffle mayo). Nonetheless, they’re deliciously crisp on the outside, and smooth on the inside, thanks to the blend of potato and mozzarella.
Braised Bourbon Beef Ribs are large and tender, and taste particularly good when eaten together with the crunchy onion rings. Chimichurri and chilli add some heat to the slight sweetness of the bourbon. The Confit of Pork Belly is topped with super crispy, finely scored crackling. Most of the fat has been rendered away, leaving succulent pork belly meat to enjoy with the refreshing fennel slaw.
A special for the weekend is the Coffee Panna Cotta with vanilla ice cream and berries. It has a great coffee hit, thanks to a good amount of their single origin coffee. It may not look as elaborate as some of the panna cottas you see on Instagram, but it’s one of the most well-executed ones I’ve had in a cafe. The panna cotta is smooth, jiggly, and has the right amount of firmness, as well as a good flavour running through.
Two Fat Monks is right next to Fairfield Station, so it’s very convenient to pop in and out of if you’re tight for time. They recently opened for dinner service on Fridays and Saturdays, giving you even more opportunities to try their delicious new menu.
