In multicultural Melbourne, we’ve fallen in love with the exploration of different cuisines. Fittingly, the dishes at Travelling Bandit have been inspired by global travels, bringing a little bit of that foodie experience back to the ‘burbs. Think Sri Lankan egg hoppers, Spanish tortillas and Belgian waffles all in the one place.
There are still the usual suspects like porridge and smashed avo and giant panini on the menu. The Pumpkin Eggs have cubes of roasted pumpkin, grilled halloumi, broccolini, pumpkin puree, poached eggs, and multigrain toast. The halloumi is not overly salty or dry. It’s a very tasty dish.
I choose to go with the Japanese Souffle Pancakes with stewed rhubarb and strawberries, vanilla bean mascarpone, and pistachio crumb. The thick, head-turning pancakes are certainly soft and airy, though not quite as fluffy as expected. The stewed fruit contributes most of the flavour of the dish, and the mascarpone breaks up its sweetness a bit. It’s something you don’t see often here, so if you’re curious they’re worth a try.
The menu concept at Travelling Bandit is an exciting one, and with the wealth of international cuisines and dishes to choose from the possibilities are endless. Here’s hoping that the locals embrace the variety as much as our city has embraced global cuisine.
