10 Mar Three Crowns, West Melbourne
Known for its mainly American fare, family-run pub Three Crowns sits prominently on the corner of Victoria and King St. The modest but clean space features a separate dining room, a wine bar and a beer garden. Shawn Davies runs the kitchen, offers mostly American food like starts of southern fried chicken, Buffalo wings and chilli cheese fries. The mains menu includes a range of burgers, and more meaty things like parmas, ribs and steak.
We both went for burgers. Dad ordered the Flaming Crown; a quarter pound of Angus beef mince spiced with cayenne pepper, melted American cheddar, bacon, fried onions, jalapenos and Frank’s red hot mayo on brioche. Unfortunately the beef pattie had lost its pink blush. The jalapenos and Frank’s red hot mayo made for one spicy burger – great for those wanting a chilli kick with all that fatty protein.
The burger for serious pork lovers, the Smoked Pork Belly Burger came with crispy bacon and not one, but three slices of super smokey and succulent pork belly. Texas Hollerin barbeque sauce tied the flavours and textures together, and refreshing relief came in the form of apple slaw.
The smoked pork belly burger was one of the most enjoyable burgers I’ve eaten in a while so a revisit might be on the cards.
