The Modern Eatery

The Modern Eatery has arrived from the Western shores of Australia. Their two locations in Perth are popular, and now we only need to take a trip down Swan Street to try their fare.

The Modern Eatery specialises in aburi sushi, the type seared by the flame of a blowtorch. Many of TME’s menu items comes with a modern twist, and there are interesting touches of creativity in the dishes, such as the addition of pickled cauliflower and blueberries to the plate of sashimi. Aburi Salmon Sashimi, miso sauce, tomato, pickled cauliflower and blueberries appears as a strange combination, but turns out to be my favourite dish. Nothing like smooth and luscious salmon licked by fire.

Salmon Oshi, pressed salmon sushi with their signature aburi sauce and sweet soy, exhibits a flame-kissed smokey flavour. Gua bao are becoming increasingly popular. Their Bao Bae, emblazoned with The Modern Eatery’s lucky cat logo, is filled with grilled chicken, crispy aonori bits and red pickle. It’s surprisingly a little more sweet than savoury.

Chef Seiya Kurogi hails from Miyazaki in Japan. It’s famous for its chicken, and one of Kurogi’s personal touches on the menu is the Miyazaki Chicken. It’s a flavoursome dish of deep-fried chicken tempura, house made tartare, nanban sauce and slaw.

One of their less traditional sushi rolls is the Caribbean Treasure with Japanese salsa, cucumber, tempura bits, avocado, and a spicy sauce. It’s a sort of fusion dish, with the fresh flavours of the salsa combining with a spicy orange-coloured sauce, that tastes like there’s soy or miso inside. Crispy tempura crumbs create extra texture around the rice.

The Modern Eatery fills the space between cheap and expensive Japanese venues, with its balance of quality and affordability. The aburi dishes, and in particular the sashimi, have me craving for another visit.
