17 Feb Temperance Society, Hughesdale
Temperance Society first caught my eye last year, when I saw enticing images of sushi burgers floating around Instagram. Sadly, sushi burger is no more, but we still drop in on the way to DFO for some shopping sustenance.
A small selection of treats sit by the counter, and some, like their wildly popular Raspberry and White Chocolate Muffin, are made on site. The oversized muffin top means it will never get the chance to stand tall, but to me the muffin top and all its crisp and browned goodness is the best bit anyway. The Latte is good, as is the fruity Passion Pop Smoothie with passionfruit, mixed berries, mango, coconut, honey, and organic almond milk.
A recent change to the menu sees the addition of the West Coast Salad, Baked Salmon, Braised Pulled Lamb and Super Green Folded Eggs. We try the Baked Salmon, and love the lime and satay sauce that dresses the zucchini noodles. There’s a good hit of flavour here, and the addition of bean sprouts adds a freshness to the dish. The salmon itself is well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked, coming with a crispy skin to boot.
The Huevos Benedictos comes with two poached eggs, chorizo, avocado, and chipotle hollandaise on two small, cylindrical potato hashes. There’s a restrained use of hollandaise, which we actually prefer. The innards of the potato rosti have just the right amount of seasoning, and we enjoy the extra saltiness from the use of chorizo. One of the better Benedicts we’ve had.
The pretty Brulee Bircher has strawberries, cranberries, and a super seed mix. The thin strips of watermelon jerky are sweet and slightly chewy, and the brulee gives some excitement usually reserved for dinnertime. There’s a lot of yoghurt in the dish, which is about half yoghurt, half oats. Admittedly we don’t often order bircher, but we love how refreshing and relatively light this sweet option is.
Temperance Society brings a high-level brunch game to the South East. For the locals, you won’t have to travel to the inner suburbs to get your brunch-fix so often anymore.
