07 Mar Stokers, South Melbourne
Stokers used to be a two store affair, but the land where the original Ivanhoe restaurant sat had to be cleared and developed into apartments. The South Melbourne site is still alive and kicking, serving their famous pancakes to all.
So, not a pancake, but dad ordered the Mr Big burger, filled with homemade Yerling Station beef patty, BLT, cheese, caramelised onion, and garlic parsley mayo. It’s a simple and honest, non-greasy burger. Burgers also come, not with potato chips, but pancake chips. Yes. Deep-fried strips of pancake. The thinness of the pancake meant there was a lot more crunch in each bite than with potato chips, but there was still the slight fluffiness and sweetness associated with pancakes.
The Banana Flambe pancakes were a banana lover’s dream, being filled with bananas, and topped with even more bananas. The upper-most halves of the fruit became caramelised once drizzled with flaming Vanilla & Lime Spice Rum and set alight, delivering a fire spectacle at the table and ensuring a subsequent sugary crunch.
While there are many places to dine on Clarendon St, if you’re after a wide selection of sweet and savoury pancakes, Stokers is a good bet.
