Rice Paper Sister, the sophisticated sibling of Rice Paper Scissors, is only two weeks old but is already leaving quite the impression.
Chef Ross Magnaye, who was head chef at the Liverpool St branch of Rice Paper Scissors, has moved over to oversee the kitchen here. Like Rice Paper Scissors, Rice Paper Sister is based around shared dishes but the food is a bit less street-style in nature.
It may be the grown up sibling of the trio, but they still want you to eat with your hands. We start proceedings with a bang. Black Sesame Wafers are topped with swimmer crab, crab roe mayo and black caviar. It’s a big hit of flavour to the tastebuds.
We probably should have started with the more delicate Hiramasa Kingfish Sashimi instead, which has been marinated in seaweed for an hour and is dressed with white soy, fermented rice vinegar and tangy yuzu.
The also tasty Isaan-style Kangaroo Tartar contains chilli, fresh herbs, roasted rice and burnt eggplant dressing. Lots of texture to enjoy, especially with the crackers. Tempura QLD Lobster Rolls have chrysanthemum leaves, nori mayo, mustard pickles. The large, juicy nuggets of lobster are moreish.
We turn up the heat with the Wok-tossed Port Phillip Calamari with kaffir lime and spicy red sambal sauce, before journeying to Bali with the smokey and juicy BBQ jumbo live Clarence River King Prawns, slathered in a rich Jimbaran spiced butter and lime sauce.
The Babi Guling, Balinese roast suckling pig, comes with ‘lawar’ young jackfruit salad and small pieces of crackling. Flakey roti is provided to go with the tender pork. The accompanying sauce looks very spicy, but isn’t actually too hot. Twice-cooked Duck Leg with sweet mandarin jam, Shanghai pancakes and cucumber concludes the meal.
Featuring a bit of everything, Rice Paper Sister may not focus on any particular Asian cuisine, but it’s far from a jack-of-all-trades, master of none sort of place. Give it a go, and you’ll find happiness on Hardware Lane.
