Coating burgers with 24K gold leaf seems like a bit of a crazy idea, but Phat Stacks has done it, introducing the first 24K gold burgers and shakes in Australia.

If you’re not into all the bling of the golden burgers, you’ll be pleased to know that the burgers are available in regular form. The Hotshot has crispy fried chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, bacon and chipotle. The Blue Baller comes with quite a firm beef patty, sharp gorgonzola, sweet caramelised onions, baked mushroom, and a drizzle of balsamic. It’s a good combination of flavours, and one that’s quite different from the norm.

The huge Chicken Ribs are lightly battered and fried in a hot sauce glaze, though they’re not particularly spicy. The Loaded Chips are tasty thanks to the bacon and cheese, and there’s a good ratio of chips to topping.

I accidentally order a golden shake special rather than their famous 24K Golden Shake, but there’s still lots of chocolate, and what’s pretty much a solid chocolate bar coated in gold leaf takes centre stage. As with the Golden Shake, it comes with a liquid nitrogen smoke show that captivates not only us, but the diners on tables nearby. The shake isn’t just insta-worthy; it also tastes good.

Burger places are popping up everywhere, but Phat Stacks certainly offers something unique to the market.
