Maha, Melbourne CBD

Maha is a funky and modern space with a semi-open kitchen. It was quite popular today; soon after I entered at 12pm, it was filled with a large group of Telstra workers and shortly afterwards, a group of Western Bulldogs staff.

Today I came to try the express lunch bar menu (available weekdays). I settled on the $15 option, which was the maha signature 12 hour roasted lamb and a glass of wine. For $25 they add an extra course of fish.

The bar version of the lamb doesn’t come with the pistachio and green olive tabouleh on top, but still had the side pilaf with almond and freekeh. The lamb came with pistachio, onions, parsley and ?labne. It wasn’t as flavoursome as I expected it to be, but was still quite good. Perhaps it would be better with tabouleh. The pilaf was nice and tasty and was the most enjoyable part of the meal. Unfortunately I couldn’t pick any of the spices used in it.

Today’s wine was a merlot. It was quite easy to drink but when I tasted it after mouthfuls of food it tasted more bitter and dry than it did previously. This was only the first or second time I’ve had a full standard drink and in hindsight, probably not the best timing seeing as I had 3 hours of uni afterwards. I did actually feel quite light-headed as I was leaving the restaurant but fortunately had an hour to recover. It was most likely due to sipping about 1/4 of the wine on an empty stomach and barely any breakfast.

The bill was stylishly presented to my table in a hollowed-out book – not something I was expecting for an express lunch at the bar. Shane Delia will be bringing back his famous lamb burger for their $18 beer and burger lunch deal in August, so stay tuned for a follow-up.
