Magic Mountain Saloon, Melbourne CBD

Magic Mountain Saloon presented a very interesting proposition to city brunch goers with its Asian influenced morning menu. Enticing options covered both sweet and savoury, dry and soupy, light and heavy. The menu ranged from Black Sticky Rice, Strawberries, Banana, Coconut Cream & Dried Mango Granola, to Silken Tofu & Shitake Mushroom Broth, and included more unusual combinations like Smashed Broccoli, Egg, Crispy Pork & Corn Fried Rice.

The multi-level restaurant was actually smaller than I expected, though the uppermost floor featured a fall length mirror, giving the illusion of spaciousness.

On this occasion I had the chicken and kaffir lime scotched egg with pork ribs & tamarind. It was a massive, hearty breakfast, and obviously not for people looking for light brunch options! Sticky pork ribs balanced atop the crispy scotch eggs, and the sweet, sticky tamarind sauce was drizzled beneath. The flavour of the kaffir lime in the mince was very prominent – a little too prominent for me – and the ribs were a bit dry. Though my dish didn’t completely win me over, most of my companions thoroughly enjoyed theirs. Magic Mountain Saloon is a place to keep in mind for the times when only an Asian breakfast will do!
