27 Nov La Luna Bistro, Carlton North
Nestled inconspicuously on leafy corner of Rathdowne St, La Luna Bistro has been serving contemporary Australian cuisine with a Mediterranean influence for over a decade. Chef and owner Adrian Richardson utilises produce from local suppliers to create dishes that showcase their ingredients.
Though quiet when we arrived for lunch, the unpretentious and bistro-like restaurant was soon bustling with activity. We started with some house-made bread that had just come out of the oven. The bread had a lovely crust and the multigrain was packed with all sorts of seeds.
Since La Luna Bistro is known for its steaks, all of which are are dry-aged for 8 weeks, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try one. My pick was the filet mignon wrapped in bacon. Mum had the roast pork – she does love her pork crackling. I ordered my steak medium-rare so when the waitress came to check on us I mentioned it was a bit overdone. I received a new steak, which was done nicely. The sauce, bacon and caponata complemented the tender steak without taking the attention away from the flavoursome meat.
In comparison, mum’s pork had a large number of ingredients but they combined to form a wonderful harmony of flavours that was tasty, fresh and incredibly satisfying. The perfectly crispy crackling further added to the enjoyment of this dish and it was definitely the dish of the day.
