28 Jan Espresso Room, Northcote
It’s a hot day when we make our visit to Espresso Room, so we cool down with a Mango Juice and Detox Smoothie, which is more like a juice but still very refreshing.
The all-day breakfast and lunch menu is quite comprehensive, ranging from breakfast staples to sliders and more substantial dishes. There’s a fair bit of seafood in the Seafood Paella, and we discover prawns, scallops and calamari amongst the pork sausage. The rice has a nice flavour, and although the crunchy soccarat is absent, it’s not usually something I expect when I order paella at a cafe. Chargrilled Atlantic Salmon is served with homemade hummus, and a well-dressed and tangy fennel, onion and herb salad. It’s a pairing I haven’t tried before, but the hummus went quite well with the salmon in this dish. As expected, the Protein Pancakes are much more dense than regular pancakes, but the flavour combinations are good.
With its generous servings and homely flavours, Espresso Room seems like reliable local place a to pop in to for a decent feed.
