05 Mar Chez Mademoiselle, Prahran
From the people behind Chez Olivier comes their new French-style cafe, Chez Mademoiselle. Located right next door and sharing a kitchen between the two of them, Chez Mademoiselle is both a deli and cafe. As well as sweets and pastries, they offer take-home packs of some of Chez Olivier’s crowd favourite dishes to cook at home.
The cafe is small, long and narrow. At the back you’ll find a cosy parlour complete with lounge chairs and a fireplace. We come in to have a taste of what Chez Mademoiselle has to offer, trying mini versions of what they have to offer.
Gougères, choux pastry puffs lined with Comté cheese on the inside, are airy, lightly crisp, and delicious. Mini toast comes topped with terrine and cornichons, or smoked salmon and cream cheese, and there is also tasty and moist ham and cheese quiche to enjoy. More cheese features in the ham and cheese croissants, but the highlight is most definitely the croque monsieur. Piping hot, toasty, full of melted cheesey goodness, and redolent of truffle oil. If only ours were full-sized.
Moving to the sweets, there’s a large selection of macarons to choose from. The shells aren’t quite as crisp, and the insides aren’t as chewy as I’d like, but the macarons we take home for later fare better. The light and airy chocolate mousse is topped with orange zest to liven things up. There’s plenty on the tart front too. There are cases filled with crème patissiere and topped with fresh fruit, lemon curd with meringue, and a rich and delectable dark chocolate ganache sprinkled with gold dust.
Chez Mademoiselle provides an intimate French cafe experience to Greville Street. I’ll be back for those croque monsieur.
