My visit to De Clieu this morning took place relatively early (8:30am), but the cafe was over half full with dining patrons and takeaway coffee customers. Today marked the official opening of Ba'get's Russell Street store and to celebrate they were giving away free banh mi. The free offerings were classic meat, grilled lemongrass chicken and Buddha's tofu ba'gets. There was a small seating area for about 18-20 people at the front window. For this balmy-day visit, I had the pear and rhubarb and a daily special flavour called Montgomery's Gold Mine (dark chocolate w. gold chocolate-coated honeycomb). The pear and rhubarb was deliciously smooth and creamy; my favourite flavour so far. The chocolate one was very strong, like dark chocolate, and I liked the extra textural element from the honeycomb. Although Oko Oko serves also rice dishes, their main specialty are their pancakes, which are basically a fusion between Japanese Osaka-style okonomiyaki and pizza. I was after baked eggs today and an early finish provided the opportunity to satisfy my craving. The baked egg daily specials were the vegetarian option of miso eggplant, tofu and noodles and the non-vegetarian option of lemon and herb chicken with potatoes. Part of the eggs were slightly overdone, but I still enjoyed the dish. The herbs, including the parsley on top, helped lift the flavour.
