Ba’get, Melbourne CBD

Today marked the official opening of Ba’get’s Russell Street store and to celebrate they were giving away free banh mi. The free offerings were classic meat, grilled lemongrass chicken and Buddha’s tofu ba’gets.

There was a small seating area for about 18-20 people at the front window. Fortunately I came before the lunch crowd so was able to secure a seat quite easily.

Grilled lemongrass chicken was clearly the most popular; they were being handed out as soon as they came off the production line. It contained grilled chicken, egg butter, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, coriander, fried onion, hoisin sauce and fresh chilli. The bread roll was warm and crispy and the fillings were generous, though most of the chicken pieces I got didn’t have a strong lemongrass taste. Hoisin sauce provided the predominant flavour, but it was broken up by the fresh vegetables, chilli and coriander.

They also had complimentary pandan tea, which I’ve never heard of before. I quite like pandan and enjoyed the subtle pandan-flavour in the tea as well.
