This is the first time I've intentionally bought and tried a variety of mango other than Kensington Pride, mainly because they're on special at Safeway but also because mum isn't the one buying fruit this week. The board at Safeway said Calypso mangoes have a small seed and firm flesh. Maybe it wasn't ripe yet, but it was firmer and not as sweet as Kensington Pride. Perhaps I should have waited for it to ripen a bit; it look pale on the inside but I don't know if...

My second attempt at cooking barley. This time I went for Japanese flavours. At the end I stirred in some nori strips, but unfortunately half of them got stuck to the bottom of the pot. No matter; it still tasted good. Note for next time: add nori in later and don't leave it sitting there on high heat because the barley squashes it to the bottom and makes it burn. My first visit to this restaurant, located where the first site of Sichuan Dining Room (Sichuan Dining Room relocated up the road but has since closed down for good, which is a shame). No special occasion; mum couldn't be bothered cooking today. The tofu dish was quite nice and may be worth attempting at home; the egg yolk in the sauce made it taste so much better than if it weren't added. The menu actually said 'egg tofu and prawns' so I originally thought it would have Japanese-style egg...

After day 2 of the conference we decided to go out for dinner at this popular restaurant. I wasn't particularly hungry so I shared a seafood platter with a friend. It cost me $16 and wasn't as substantial as I expected, so I was a little disappointed. Taste-wise, the seafood was fresh. Another dish I considered was the pot of steamed mussels. The dish was quite tomato-ey and the mussels weren't that big, but I think it was better value than the Nautical Nibble Sharing Platter. There were...

My second visit to Tao's. The six-course set lunch (the only thing available) was $38 as opposed to $58 for a seven-course dinner. The selection of dishes available for lunch was slightly more limited, but those not included for lunch were dishes we'd tried previously anyway. The lunch menu was pretty much the same as my previous dinner visit, minus the chawanmushi. Instead of the chawanmushi as the extra dinner dish, they offered 'Tao's Special Rice Meatball'. My choice of dishes were: Starter: Raw Beef Nigiri Main: Hokkaido Style Miso Hotpot Desert: Tao’s Style Sesame Macaron Because I...
