University Cafe is the oldest cafe and restaurant on Lygon St, established in 1952 by Eros and Gianni Milani. A popular spot for coffee, it's also open from breakfast through to dinner. Although I knew it was a popular local, I was still surprised by how busy it was on a weeknight, with a number of regulars coming in. After ordering we were offered a basket of sliced sourdough with little tubs of Western Star, but didn't have long to eat it before the dishes arrived. Taking over from the former site of Mutti's and following on from their success at their Richmond taqueria Chingon, and Collingwood smokehouse and bar Le Bon Ton, brothers Will and Mick Balleau have created yet another restaurant. By day it's 5 Points Deli, but come night time Longhorn Saloon offers drinks, bar snacks, mains and meat from the grill. The space has quite a character, with its wood panelling, pendant lights and pressed copper-lined walls. I really did feel like I'd been transported to another place. The 5 Points...

Middle Fish is only a few doors down from Seven Seeds on Berkeley Street; an area mostly made up of commercial buildings and what appear to be warehouses. It seems a somewhat unlikely location for a restaurant and it's grey facade is easy to miss, however, on entering we found ourselves in a completely different place. Its warm and casual interior design was incredibly inviting. We ordered a couple of dishes to share amongst the group and awaited our much anticipated feast. The fish cake was smooth, with a...

Jean and Sarin have created an interesting space full of bright colours and simple furniture at Nora. It's almost part-cafe part-art gallery with a table adorned with the ingredients used for the charcoal tarts available that day. Seating is limited, giving it an air of something really special. Nora is located right next to the post office. I didn't see any signage indicating its location clearly (or maybe I was too distracted by the brief interlude of warm, sunny weather during my walk), but the presence of outdoors tables...

Walking through to the end of a little alley just next to the Shell station I came to this little oasis of food and coffee. The Vertue of the Coffee Drink is in such a random location that it's almost like finding goodies in an Easter egg hunt. The front counter has a cabinet full of sweet treats such as cookie sandwiches from Butterbing Cookies, scrolls by Kwak Scrolls, doughnuts from Matt Forbes, pastries from Noisette. Vertue also doubles as a retailer, having coffee beans and other equipment...
