Today we took a trip out to try some Middle Eastern food, which is not a cuisine I'm too familiar with. The food items were divided into three sections on the menu, corresponding to the three different serving sizes of sharing plates. For the two of us, we chose one medium-sized dish, the BBQ lamb ribs, and two larger plates of quail 'Joojeh' kebab al-sikbaj and khoresht ghalieh mahi (South Iranian fish stew). Dinner was at Au Rocher De Cancale, which is virtually on the corner of Rue Mandar and Rue Montorgeuil. The restaurant was founded in 1846 and the walls still have some of the old art that had painted into the plaster and preserved with pieces of perspex. There was only one waiter managing the top floor, but he was quite efficient. He was also much more patient than the waiter at Le Vaudeville, taking time to translate each main menu item properly and having a more friendly and...

I thought Bayte warranted a second visit, so I came with A2 at 12pm so we had the option of both breakfast and lunch items. My Samak Nayeh (raw yellowfin tuna kibbeh, $16) was refreshingly citrusy and accompanied with thin, crispy flatbread and labne. Within the kibbeh was burghal, onions, mint and spices. A2's Lahem Meshwi (spiced lamb backstrap and onion, $8.50) was tender and tasty. It came with a dollop of labne, some olive oil and a sprinkle of spice. What was more impressive was the Soubih el Sit (filo...

Recently I've had to take the bus to church, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to visit Bayte for brunch following my lunch fail the other week. I wanted to have the baked eggs, which came in a whole okra and tomato stew, topped with shanklish and served with flatbread ($15), but they changed to their new Spring menu on Monday and it wasn't on the menu anymore. I don't know why this always happens to me - should've come last Sunday but didn't think of it. From...

Time for my return to try Maha's famous lamb burger. Previously $15, the burger and beer deal has sinced increased to $18. The burger of the month for August is lamb burger with candied olive mayo, onion rings, basturma and kefalograviera with a 33cl Efes Pilsen beer, imported from Greece. The fluffy and slightly sweet tasting buns had been toasted on one side and the patty was charred but still moist. Fried shallots added a bit of a crunch and the cheese and basturma gave the burger a nice...
