The Nicholson end of Johnston St is where Jackson Finlay and Diana Martinez have decided set up Fitzroy's newest cafe, Uncle & Jak. Opened just 2 months ago, much of the fit out was designed by themselves. Following a minimalistic theme, the space features warm lighting, bare timbers and white painted brick. Cutler & Co, Andrew McConnell's flagship restaurant, first opened in 2009 and has been converted from an old metal works factory. The restaurant actually had a more casual atmosphere than I expected, with bar seating, a lounge area on the side, and more tables, including banquette seating, towards the back. After many, many years, I finally made it around to Moroccan Soup Bar. I'd heard there are normally crazy queues, especially on Fridays and weekends, but I think today the cold and wet weather got the better of most people, and though it was still full, there wasn't a line at the time we came. After a brief overseas holiday, dad and I arrived back in Melbourne on what was apparently the coldest day since August. Perhaps not the best timing, given our holiday took place in Malaysia.
