Yet another trip to Japas, this time with only the family. Mum: Seared Salmon Belly - Premium toro salmon, flame–seared served with shallots and pine nuts ($15.80) Agedashi Tofu ($6.80) Beef Udon with Miso Soup ($14.80) Dad: Tokyo Rose sushi roll - Reverse sushi salmon topped with a fold of salmon belly sashimi and tobiko ($15.80) Me and A2: Build your own sushi -  Tuna and avocado with furikake and tobiko, with brown rice mixed in ($15.80) I liked the custom sushi I ordered, but there wasn't much brown rice in it considering it was $1 extra. Everything tasted OK...

For this visit I decided to try one of the dishes on their 'signature menu'. This was sake-poached blue grenadier with soba, snow peas and carrots. I thought there'd only be one fish fillet, but to my surprise there were two. Unfortunately there wasn't much taste in the fish and I couldn't tell there was sake in it. At least the fish wasn't overcooked. The vegetables were just boiled/blanched. The soba had the nice chewy texture to it and the broth was tasty; it just wasn't in the...

Tomodachi recently changed its name to Japas to reflect the change in their menu. The name is a blend of "Japanese" and "tapas". They'd literally just put up some lantern decorations so the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. The nasu dengaku came first, and looked different to what I expected ($7.80). The eggplant had been taken out of the skin and diced, then mixed with the miso sauce, which tasted strongly of hoisin for some reason. The sauce was too overpowering and used too generously, and it masked the...

My second visit to Tao's. The six-course set lunch (the only thing available) was $38 as opposed to $58 for a seven-course dinner. The selection of dishes available for lunch was slightly more limited, but those not included for lunch were dishes we'd tried previously anyway. The lunch menu was pretty much the same as my previous dinner visit, minus the chawanmushi. Instead of the chawanmushi as the extra dinner dish, they offered 'Tao's Special Rice Meatball'. My choice of dishes were: Starter: Raw Beef Nigiri Main: Hokkaido Style Miso Hotpot Desert: Tao’s Style Sesame Macaron Because I...

My first teppankyaki experience! To be honest, the food wasn't outstanding and the showmanship wasn't great. I suppose that's really dependent on the chef assigned to the table.
