We joined the €66 excursion tonight: ‘Venetian Night Out with Dinner’. We met in the lobby at 5:50pm and proceeded to the ‘parking island’ by coach. From there we caught a water taxi to Venice city. We were quite squashed inside the taxi. Two people had to stand outside with the driver. We opened up the roof of the back part of the boat so the people there could stand up. Lunch was at a Marche/Burger King Worthersee, which was a self-service place. This place was right next to the warmest lake in Austria, the water of which can reach up to 22-23°C in summer. The view with the lake would have been nice except it was snowing so everything was grey. When we arrived at the Marchfelderhof Restaurant we were greeted by five waiters who held up a welcome banner and stopped traffic to roll out a red carpet across the road. They tied a piece of red ribbon between the two poles of the banner and gave someone a pair of scissors to cut it as they entered. Most of the coffee shops here allow smokers inside, which wasn’t very pleasant. After scouting a number of small eateries we ended up going to Café Melange. Everyone got coffee except for me; I had goulash soup (€3.50). The bread roll I got with the soup was round and divided into five sections, liked a pinwheel. Before leaving Salzburg we had time to wander around the farmers market in Universitätsplatz (we didn’t go to the Christmas market) and the oldest bakery in the city. From the old bakery I got a 1kg round, flat loaf of stone-baked rye bread (€3.90). At one of the farmers market stalls we bought a poppy seed strudel (€2.50), a gingerbread cookie with devil icing decoration (€1) and a hollow, cylindrical Hungarian sweet bread with cinnamon sugar (€4). The Hungarian sweet bread was the nicest of the things we bought....
