To celebrate the end of exams we headed out to Kenji - a Japanese restaurant mum has been wanting to try for ages. We decided to share nasu dengaku, agedashi tofu, a dragon roll and a platter of sushi and sashimi. I've not eaten agedashi tofu in Japan, so I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to be like, but this one wasn't that wonderful. Similar to the agedashi tofu at Japas, it wasn't very smooth, the crumb wasn't crispy and there was a lot of sauce, which made...

I'd heard good things about this restaurant chain and I knew it was very popular, with queues of people making it hard to get a seat. Apparently there are many outlets in Malaysia, but I've honestly never seen it before.  I'd also heard it served quite authentic Malaysian food so I was keen to try it out. If I'd gone for lunch I might have tried the wat tan hor or char kway teow, but being dinner, I thought nasi lemak would be easier. The first thing I noticed was...

Given today's terrible, cold, windy and extremely wet weather, a hot pot dinner sounded like the perfect choice. While we waited for the table to be cleared, we pored over the A3-sized paper menu and picked our hot pot ingredients, soup bases and individual dipping sauces. We opted for a split pot with both a mild broth and normal broth. For some reason the pot only came 1/4-filled with broth so it took a while for things to get cooking. The temperamental heating element didn't help. I don't...

Off to Zen for Mother's Day, a cosy little Japanese restaurant on Burwood Road. Me - Grilled teriyaki unagi ($23.90) A2 - Miso salmon grilled in foil ($20.90) Mum - Kaiseki bento ($27.90) Dad - Wafu steak ($23.90) There was also a large selection of sake available, and the menu included a short description of each one. The bento box came with miso soup, mixed rice, teriyaki chicken, sesame salad, sashimi, sushi, tempura and ice cream (a choice of sesame, green tea or vanilla). A2 said her salmon was tasteless. There wasn't much sauce left...

This place just opened nearby, so we went to check it out. Mum's been here before so she knew what to order. This is what we shared: - Large Beef Pho ($9.50) - Special Broken Rice w. Pork, Egg, Vermicelli-Fungus-Pork Meatloaf, Julienned Chicken etc. ($10) We accidentally ordered the char-grilled chicken broken rice instead of the special broken rice and didn't realise until it arrived at the table. Although we offered to take it away and order an extra dish, they kindly changed it over. I haven't had much Vietnamese food in the...
