30 Jul BEN’S Supernatural, South Yarra
Co-founded by Jerome and Casey George-Jolson, BEN’S Supernatural is all about Balance, Energy, Nutrition and Sustenance. The menu has been developed by executive chef David Selex (ex-Florentino and London’s Nobu) and approved by nutritionist Bannie Williams. Baker David Flukes spent 18 months perfecting BEN’S low-carb buns, wraps and pizza bases. Some come with only 6g of carbs instead of the 15g found in the regular types.
The food has no refined sugar and high fructose ingredients are limited. Almost everything is made in-house, and they’re also able to cater for intolerances including gluten free diets. Pizzas can be had with toppings such as Lamb with Moroccan spices, low fat mozzarella, roast pumpkin, spinach, coriander, and tahini sauce, or perhaps Roasted Vegetables with low fat mozzarella, green capsicum, spinach, eggplant, pepitas, roast pumpkin, and kale pesto.
There’s a range of salads such as Cauliflower Rice, and Pearl Cous Cous with butternut squash, pine nuts, parsley, coriander and tahini dressing. For those who can’t give up chips, there are baked sweet potato batons seasoned with rosemary and garlic.
The Original Grass-fed Beef Burger contains grass-fed free-range beef, lettuce, tomato, relish, and onion jam. The patty does indeed taste lean and healthy; a feeling enhanced by the fresh ingredients included with it. If you’re coming in expecting greasy burgers and pizzas, then this place isn’t for you, but BENS is hoping to satisfy the market for wholesome, unprocessed and nutritionally balanced versions of our fast food favourites.
