12 Mar Zoobibi, Hawthorn East
Zoobibi is a unique amalgamation of homeware store and cafe that has been created out of a passion for travel and adventure, food, music, art and community. Affordable homewares are sourced directly through family-run factories worldwide, and their community-minded spirit is evidenced by the support of various non-profit groups including SisterWorks.
The courtyard-like dining space is filled with natural light, and there’s plenty of space between the tables. Coffee is by Padre, and on the counter is a large spread of cakes, pastries and sandwiches-to-go.
Everything is made from scratch and the menu changes seasonally, generally following a particular cuisine. At the moment you can tuck into dishes such as Persian Baked Eggs, which although slightly overdone today, is a flavoursome combination of smokey beans, lentils, sujuk and baby chickpeas. Seasonal Field Mushrooms is another solid choice. There’s a touch of sweetness throughout the Cauliflower Salad with roasted honey pumpkin, grains and pomegranate. The servings size of the salad is rather generous – you certainly won’t be going hungry here.
Zoobibi is still building up to the full potential that its owners have envisioned. Look out for further developments including jazz nights coming soon!
