27 Feb Venus & Co, Albert Park
Cyprus, the ‘Island of Venus’, has a cuisine that is rarely explored in Melbourne. The food at Venus & Co is authentic Cypriot, and you’ll see its influences from Middle Eastern and Greek cuisines. Recipes that have been handed down through the generations sit alongside contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes on the menu.
Warm, fluffy, crisp pita is perfect for scooping up the beautifully smokey Eggplant Caviar, Pomegranate and Chilli dip, and the Chickpea & Tahini Hummus with goats milk feta. BBQ Street Corn is seasoned with black salt, and the juicy kernels receive further flavour from tangy Meredith’s goats curd and haloumi crumbs. Crispy Tempura Zucchini Flowers are filled with a surprisingly light mixture of anari, haloumi and pine nuts.
The Koupes are a stand out. Cracked wheat surrounds a generous filling of spiced beef mince and currants. It’s a dish packed full of flavour and moisture. And what would the cuisine be without lamb? Their Lamb Shoulder, which has been cooked over coals, is handled perfectly, and comes with gyros and condiments like tzatziki to create a filling main course.
End the feast with the airy Cypriot Coffee and Callebut Dark Chocolate Mousse, vanilla bean ice cream, and kourabiethe, or perhaps the much sweeter Halva Sundae with spiced strawberries.
We leave Venus & Co with satisfied bellies, wondering what other delicious aspects of Cypriot cuisine we’ve been missing out on.
