01 Jul Tahina, Fitzroy
For Israeli street food, Tahina has always been a favourite of mine, and their new branch in Fitzroy provided another opportunity to drop in and try some of their traditional vegetarian Israeli fare, as well as some of their more inventive dishes.
As always, Tahina has their three variations on shakshuka – red, green and white. All can be made vegan by substituting the eggs for eggplant. It’s quite a hearty meal, being made up of not only the shakshuka, but also pita bread with hummus, and a huge plate of Israeli salad. It’s a comforting dish to order, and great no matter what time of day it is.
Their Monkey Salad is also delicious. It’s a mix of quinoa, roasted sweet potato, corn, broccoli and avocado, with crunchy dukkah chickpeas and a tahini dill dressing. The flavours and textures of this salad are anything but boring.
The Vegan Carrot Hotdog surprises. Instead of sausage, the black roll is filled with a spiced, cured carrot, together with pickled cabbage, tahini amba mustard and sweet tomato sauce. It’s a tasty eat, with a bit of sweetness and tang. A little pile of sweet potato crisps scattered over the top adds to the the enjoyment.
Tahina has a few vegan desserts to choose from too, including brownies, baklava and a chocolate souffle, that doesn’t quite have the texture of a traditional souffle, but is still a satisfying chocolatey treat.
Thanks to an outdoor courtyard, Fitzroy’s seating capacity is about double that of the Northcote original, so it’ll be even easier to get in and satisfy your Tahina cravings.
