Gelato Messina

After dinner, K and I ventured one block east to try out Gelato Messina. The impressive, modern and sleek shopfront houses a cabinet showcasing around 40 different flavours of gelato and sorbet as well as some of their gelato cakes, such as the Black Forest (as seen on Masterchef) and Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom.

The line wasn’t too long when we entered, but after spending some time perusing the varieties on offer, the store was packed. Fortunately the staff were efficient and the queue was cleared quickly.

Both of us went for a 2-scoop cup, which was $6. I had Boss’s Wife (hazelnut & coffee gelato with white chocolate and hazelnut praline ganache) and the popular Salted Caramel and White Chocolate.

K’s choices were Apple Pie (apple gelato with housemade apple pie) and Peanut Pretzel Brownie (peanut butter gelato smashed with preztel brownie).

The gelati had a smooth, creamy texture and of the four flavours sampled today, I liked the Peanut Pretzel Brownie best. I found the salted caramel and white chocolate a bit sweet for my palate, but I did appreciate the generous presence of chunky ganache and chocolate that were folded through.
