Dip In Cafe, Melbourne CBD

Dip In Cafe

Started by two friends with a penchant for travel, Dip In Cafe has been occupying a building right opposite Red Spice Road since early last year. It has a humble entrance, but walking down the stairs you’re greeted by a large, spacious and colourful dining area filled with knick knacks and decorative pieces that clearly reflect their love for international adventure.

Dip In Cafe

Although they have many other things on offer, their passion is in their dips, which are made in-house with natural ingredients, and no additives or preservatives. The selection is inspired by their travels, and takeaway packs can be arranged so you can easily enjoy their dips on the go, or at a picnic.

Dip In Cafe - Shakshuka - Slow Cooked Tomato Sauce, Two Baked Eggs, add Halloumi Cheese ($13,90+4,50) Make Hummus Not War - Homemade Hummus, Pan-fried Beef and Lamb, Pine Nuts, Mushrooms ($15.90)

We each picked one of their signature bread bowls. The shakshuka contained slow cooked tomato sauce and was served with two baked eggs perched on top. I also asked for some grilled halloumi cheese on the side at the waitress’ suggestion. She was right when she said its flavour went very well with the shakshuka.

Dip In Cafe - Make Hummus Not War - Homemade Hummus, Pan-fried Beef and Lamb, Pine Nuts, Mushrooms ($15.90)

The Make Hummus Not War was delicious, and admittedly more so than I expected. I was initially worried the lamb and beef mix would be too salty, or the flavours too overwhelming, but it was actually very well balanced. There was a variety of textures and flavours from the addition of pine nuts and mushrooms, and the hummus added a perfect amount of moisture to tie everything together. The hummus had half-soaked into the base of the bowl, creating a slightly messy but rather enjoyable meal.

Dip In Cafe - Hummus, Grilled Eggplant and Moroccan Carrot Dips with Bread ($13 + 5.90)

We also ordered a selection of three dips to share and some multi-grain bread to go with it. The bread, including those used for the bread bowls, are made in house, and it arrived at the table warm and crusty. Out of the hummus, grilled eggplant and moroccan carrot, the carrot dip was our favourite. The hummus, same as what was found in the bread bowl, was creamy and moreish.

Dip In Cafe

Dip In gave us a simple but satisfying meal with plenty of flavour, and the large variety of interesting-sounding menu items makes it one to return to.
