As part of the opening weekend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Southgate held the Southgate Fiesta, involving live music performances, free movie screenings and $15 tasting platters from participating restaurants. I chose to try out the tasting platter offered by Bluetrain. Recently revamped with a modern colour scheme, it has high ceilings and an airy feel that create a relaxed and casual environment. Bluetrain has been a resident at Southgate for more than 20 years and has a menu covering pizzas, pastas, burgers, char-grilled dishes and...

Nestled inconspicuously on leafy corner of Rathdowne St, La Luna Bistro has been serving contemporary Australian cuisine with a Mediterranean influence for over a decade. Chef and owner Adrian Richardson utilises produce from local suppliers to create dishes that showcase their ingredients. Though quiet when we arrived for lunch, the unpretentious and bistro-like restaurant was soon bustling with activity. We started with some house-made bread that had just come out of the oven. Ora is still as popular as ever, especially now that it's been voted Melbourne's best food cafe of 2014 by the Good Cafe Guide. For a long-awaited and much-needed catchup, Allium seemed like the perfect place. Having previously tried Livingroom, I was pleased to find the ambience was still very much like it was previously - nice but relaxed. K had the Aromatic Broth entree to start the meal. Unfortunately I didn't try too much of it because I was unwell, but it seemed clean and flavoursome. K did say it was very good. Invited for a cocktail crafting workshop hosted by Grey Goose, I found myself at Saint Crispin with great anticipation of what was about to unfold. These Taste By Appointment workshops have been held all over the world, but this is the first time Grey Goose has run them in Australia. Staff at the Thomas Olive bar made up some Le Fizz, which also happened to be the cocktail paired with the amuse bouche. Containing original-flavour vodka, St. Germain liqueur, lime juice and soda water, it's designed as an apertif and...
