Magic Mountain Saloon presented a very interesting proposition to city brunch goers with its Asian influenced morning menu. Enticing options covered both sweet and savoury, dry and soupy, light and heavy. The Nicholson end of Johnston St is where Jackson Finlay and Diana Martinez have decided set up Fitzroy's newest cafe, Uncle & Jak. Opened just 2 months ago, much of the fit out was designed by themselves. Following a minimalistic theme, the space features warm lighting, bare timbers and white painted brick. Started by two friends with a penchant for travel, Dip In Cafe has been occupying a building right opposite Red Spice Road since early last year. With a free afternoon, I found myself free to explore a bit more of the cafe scene in Camberwell. Legacy has a very discreet, non-descript shop front with full-length tinted windows, and after surviving the horror that is Camberwell Junction, I drove past it a few times before eventually realising it was next to Beacons. I took A2 to the airport this morning and after saying our goodbyes I used the opportunity to visit the Western suburbs for a change. I rarely come here so there were many cafes to pick from. In the end I chose Ascot Food Store. Also because, well, there aren't many cafes open at 7am on Sunday morning. The cafe has a retro feel, especially in the back rooms which feature bright orange furniture and funky light fixtures. A quaint hodge-podge of items are used in the decor too...
