Abruzzo Club, Brunswick East

I purchased a Groupon for the Abruzzo Club a few months ago and it was time to use it. We managed to get a carpark right outside the social club, but there was also a carpark across the road specially for patrons. For $30 we received 2 appetisers, 2 entrees, 2 mains and 2 glasses of wine, altogether $119 in value. The restaurant had a special set menu for Groupon buyers.

Mum’s choice of menu:
Bruschetta
Penne matriciana
Fish of the day (Atlantic salmon)

My choice of menu:
Bruschetta
Spaghetti marinara
Chilli prawns (with Napoli sauce)

We think the bread used for the bruschetta was the same (complimentary [this word always reminds me of a certain maths teacher’s joke, for those who know it]) bread supplied on the table. The tomatoes appeared to be mixed with olive oil and garlic.

This place supposedly makes their own pasta (this was not advertised but I heard it from online reviews). Not sure if the penne has handmade but it was the nicest dish of the night. The pipis in my spaghetti were very tasty and like the rest of the seafood, tasted fresh. I have to say I’m not a big fan of spaghetti, but this pasta had a nice texture

My chilli prawns had the biggest flavour of all the dishes, if a little salty. It had just the right amount of chilli in it. I opted for a bowl of salad (dressed with balsamic vinegar) rather than the “bed of rice”. There were about 9 tiger prawns on my plate. Mum said her salmon was a bit salty as well so she ate half of it without the skin. The salmon was cooked quite well, though the cut was smaller than I expected…I think they should have put it on a smaller plate so it wasn’t so obvious. We couldn’t complain though, given the price of our meal and the fact that we were already full after entrees.

Excellent value for $15 each. Worth a visit back, even without a voucher. Apparently their gnocchi is amazing; I’d also be keen to try their tortellini if I return.

Most Impressive: Penne matriciana
Least Impressive:
Bruschetta (not to say it was bad, but the others were better)
Remember:
 Penne matriciana
