Jacques Reymond will be closing down at the end of the year, so mum and I decided to celebrate both my parent’s birthdays and their wedding anniversary there. Set-up inside a mansion, the restaurant had a relaxed and homely feel. I specifically requested a booth seat for extra privacy and also one next to a window, which gave a nice view of the fountain. Being a house meant it had a number of different rooms, each with a slightly different ambience. Since it’s their last hurrah, it seemed fitting...

Today I had the opportunity to try Merrywell Upstairs for lunch. I’m not big on American food, but seeing as the Merrywell Burger ($22) is apparently one of the best burgers around here, I thought I’d give it a go. The burger bar is Merrywell Downstairs, but we have an Entertainment Guide discount only for the Upstairs section. According to the online menus, Upstairs served a burger (the Merrywell Angus Burger) that was almost the same as Downstairs, the main difference being served with a brioche rather than...

Livingroom was a much more casual restaurant than I expected. The quaint space looked a bit like a converted house, with floorboards, paintings and mismatched tables and chairs. I was going to get a braised ox cheek dish but instead went for the special of the day. - Me: Pancetta-wrapped Leg of Chicken...

We wanted to go out for a nice dinner for A2's birthday and settled on Bistro Guillame. Mum and I have also been wanting to try it. A2: Roasted duck breast, carrot and orange purée, caramelised endive and radish salad Mum: Steak frites with béarnaise sauce (Rangers Valley sirloin, 300 days grain fed) Dad: Chargrilled King Salmon with fennel purée and a herb salad Me: Venison tenderloin with beetroot and horseradish Dad didn't like his salmon; A2 tends to say almost everything is nice, and this was no exception; mum's beef was very...

Because there were still a few dishes we were wanting to try, we decided to return a week later for a birthday dinner. The chicken was, obviously very hot. It didn't have as much pepper as the dishes last week so it had a different sort of bite. Surprisingly, the beer added to the duck dish gave a lovely subtle flavour to the broth and I quite enjoyed it.
