Smith & Daughters took the vegan dining scene by storm, being incredibly popular by both vegans and non-vegans alike. The Nicholson end of Johnston St is where Jackson Finlay and Diana Martinez have decided set up Fitzroy's newest cafe, Uncle & Jak. Opened just 2 months ago, much of the fit out was designed by themselves. Following a minimalistic theme, the space features warm lighting, bare timbers and white painted brick. Cutler & Co, Andrew McConnell's flagship restaurant, first opened in 2009 and has been converted from an old metal works factory. The restaurant actually had a more casual atmosphere than I expected, with bar seating, a lounge area on the side, and more tables, including banquette seating, towards the back. Beans and Bagels is no more. Sir Charles is the latest venture from the owners of Axil Coffee Roaster, Dave Makin and Zoe Delaney.
