Located on the corner of Hardware Lane and Little Lonsdale St, Gypsy & Pig is a kurobuta (aka black pig or Berkshire pork) and tonkatsu specialist. It's a cozy little place mainly made up of bar seats arranged around the kitchen. The quirky, yet friendly cafe feel was accentuated by various spelling mistakes on the menu and numerous pig decorations arranged all over the counter top and window sills - even their toothpick holders were pig-shaped! I finally made it to Rice Workshop after wanting to try it before it even opened. Marketed as a rice bar, their main offerings are rice bowls with various toppings (beef, chicken, curry and salmon), however, they also do a few udon and salad dishes. You can pick other sides to go with your meal including miso soup, takoyaki, edamame, karaage, spring rolls, tempura and daifuku. These are kept in a warm cabinet and a chilled cabinet between the ordering station and the cashier. There's also a complete DIY...

J Cafe is a small Japanese restaurant offering sushi, rice dishes, noodles, bento boxes, salads and most famously, sushi burgers. Sushi burgers are basically two rice patties filled with various ingredients and wrapped with a rectangular sheet of nori. What I really wanted to try was the soft shell crab sushi burger, but apparently there's a worldwide shortage of soft shell crab. J Cafe only have limited quantities available every day and they'd already sold out by the time I arrived. Instead, I got an salmon aburi sushi burger,...

Today marked the official opening of Ba'get's Russell Street store and to celebrate they were giving away free banh mi. The free offerings were classic meat, grilled lemongrass chicken and Buddha's tofu ba'gets. There was a small seating area for about 18-20 people at the front window. Fortunately I came before the lunch crowd so was able to secure a seat quite easily. Grilled lemongrass chicken was clearly the most popular; they were being handed out as soon as they came off the production line. It contained grilled chicken, egg...
