Occupying a cosy little building in South Melbourne, Kuu is a Japanese café open for breakfast right through to dinner. The menu largely revolves around healthy, balanced food, but popular not-so-healthy things like katsu and karaage are also served. Matcha affogato came with an intense matcha syrup to pour over the vanilla ice cream rather than the traditional coffee, and...

Marketing itself as a traditional udon restaurant, Udon Yasan opened up quietly late last year and interestingly, is open for 24hrs on Friday and Saturday [caption id="attachment_11091" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Free Toppings Station[/caption] Udon Yasan is set out a like a canteen, and works similarly to Rice Workshop - all self-service. Saliva-inducing images of Mr Miyagi's nori tacos have been floating around for so long, and being a sucker for Japanese food I immediately added it to my every-growing list of places to try. The number of people in the group enabled us to book one of the three dark and cosy booths available. If you...

Kelly came up with the DIY concept of combining buns with other flavours and meats. These flavour combinations were created together with Matti Fallon, former chef of DuNord and Huxtable, and focus on Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean flavours. Looking for a last-minute place for dinner, we discovered Taketori, which is inconspiciously located in a quiet section of King Street. Its modest exterior with black tinted doors and windows opened up into a reasonably large space. It was decorated quite nicely inside, full of dark timbers and somewhat quirky decorations including a colourful origami crane mobile, and although it was perceived to be a more formal restaurant when we first entered, it still felt like casual diners would feel at home.
