Zen Japanese Restaurant, Hawthorn

Off to Zen for Mother’s Day, a cosy little Japanese restaurant on Burwood Road.

Me – Grilled teriyaki unagi ($23.90)
A2 – Miso salmon grilled in foil ($20.90)
Mum – Kaiseki bento ($27.90)
Dad – Wafu steak ($23.90)

There was also a large selection of sake available, and the menu included a short description of each one.

The bento box came with miso soup, mixed rice, teriyaki chicken, sesame salad, sashimi, sushi, tempura and ice cream (a choice of sesame, green tea or vanilla). A2 said her salmon was tasteless. There wasn’t much sauce left in the foil bowl and she also didn’t want to add the accompanying soy sauce, which might have been why. From what I could see, the salmon wasn’t overdone. Dad’s wafu steak was meant to be medium-rare – it came out more like medium-well done, but was still tender and the flavour was good. The eel in my dish was fresh with a smooth texture and the grilled veggies were the same as those that came with Dad’s beef. The slice of eggplant had a different sauce squiggled on top. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was, but I have a feeling it was similar to nasu dengaku sauce.

Although mum was the only one who had dessert, the waitress thoughtfully brought three extra spoons without us asking for them. As a nice touch for Mother’s Day, all groups who pre-booked a table were given a free small sake jug…not that we have any sake at home, but mum liked the jug’s design. Dad and A2 didn’t seem particularly impressed by their choices, but mum and I quite enjoyed our meal today.
