Yeonga, North Melbourne

Being a really hot 37C day, it probably wasn’t the best idea to go for a Korean BBQ dinner, especially when the upper floor doesn’t have airconditioning. Nevertheless, we honoured our original booking, partly because I couldn’t be bothered cooking anything for dinner in that heat anyway. This was a Groupon voucher meal so the menu was set:

Appetizer platter to share:
– Mashed potato with eggs and herb
– Kim chi
– Sweet and sour daikon
– Fresh cabbage (which was actually lettuce)

Shared Entrée:
Cajun chicken salad

Mains:
– Portions of: Short rib fillet, Marinated beef mix, Pork belly,
– Beef soybean stew
– Steamed rice

Dessert:
Choice of one Yeonga Signature Dessert to share

Dad and I were both clueless about how to cook dinner, because neither of us had eaten Korean BBQ before. Fortunately the staff came to help.

I wasn’t expecting the Cajun chicken salad to be creamy or battered and fried, though it wasn’t too bad. I liked the beef soybean stew the best. Served in a ddukbaegi, it had enoki, tofu, miso and a few other ingredients.

For dessert, dad chose the green tea ice cream with red bean jelly. The icecream was surrounded by a ring of chocolate and around it was a scatter of soft, sugary crumbs. The icecream was quite firm and I wasn’t sure I enjoyed it, but the presentation was very nice.

All over, I wasn’t that impressed with the food. I don’t know if it was the quality of the food or just the concept in general. I guess I’ll have to visit another Korean BBQ restaurant to find out.
