Something More, Fitzroy

Occupying a space off Brunswick St, Something More aims to be many things to many people. It’s a gallery, cafe and events space all in one, housed within a light-filled warehouse. The large roller doors are always open, but there’s a heater above it pushing warm air in, and blankets thoughtfully placed at the table. Apart from regular tables, there are cosy couches towards the front, and a number of communal tables, including a tall one surrounded by stools that seems to be popular with coffee-drinkers. One advantage of the warehouse setting is that it’s completely dog-friendly, so don’t be too surprised if you find yourself sharing legroom with other patron’s furry friend.

Coffee is supplied by Three Thousand Thieves, so a different coffee roaster features each month. Organic teas, juices and smoothies also featurs on the drinks menu. It’s an Asian-inspired and less carb-filled menu at Something More. Ms Kims Euro Trip consists of a crispy kimchi and pork waffle, with a pickled cucumber and spring onion salad and blue cheese mayo. The kim chi and pork is found within the waffle batter itself, and though there isn’t too much pork, it’s still a tasty eat. My initial concerns about the blue cheese are allayed when we find that its flavour is not overpowering.

My pick is the Shanghai Ball Sports. Crunchy slow-roasted brisket balls are seasoned with five-spice, and possess only a very thin coating. It’s a meaty meal that may not suit everyone first thing in the morning, but its green chilli and citrus slaw with dehydrated citrus chips introduce zing and lightness. Something I’d happily order again.

Something More - Matcha and black sesame cake ($4.50)

Matcha, black sesame and mandarin slice ($4.50)

On paying the bill, we’re enticed into purchasing a slice made by Sneaky Boy Sweets. The spongey matcha layer gives way to a biscuity black sesame base, and mandarin rind throughout gives a nice citrusy kick.

Something More represents an intriguing concept, and it’s refreshing to see cafes shaking things up. Head to Fitzroy for something a little more than ordinary.
