Shakahari, Carlton

This was probably my first experience of a vegetarian restaurant for dinner. There were many enticing items on their menu but unfortunately I could only eat one of them because of my dietary requirements in the evenings. It worked out alright, since the hot weather made me lose my appetite.

My meal was an entree called Parcel Xiao Xiao “A pan-fried parcel wrapped in a beancurd sheet of kohlrabi, oyster mushrooms, water chestnuts, mixed vegetables and chia seeds. This dish comes with seaweed and pea-sprout salad and a ponzu sauce”. At $15.50 for two pieces it was pricey, but I was prepared after reading some reviews beforehand. Although it didn’t look like it would have a very interesting taste, the flavours and textures of the parcel were actually quite nice and the ponzu sauce was delicious. I wouldn’t mind returning to try some of their other dishes at another time.
