Riccarton Rotary Sunday Market, Christchurch

After waking up relatively early (with the 2 hour time difference from Melbourne), we drove to the Riccarton Rotary Sunday Market, which was held at the Riccarton Racecourse. There was a mix of food and knick knacks, though there wasn’t as much fresh produce as I expected.

We picked up 3 punnets of strawberries for $5, tried samples of smoked salmon, caramel-coated nuts, Christmas cake and dips. For brunch we tried a $2 taster of smoked eel with aioli on a slice of baguette, a spicy lamb Lebanese souvlaki for $10 (a pita pocket was $9, and I guessed it was half the size), a venison sandwich ($6) and a Hungarian chimney cake with cinnamon ($5.50). There were also a lot of places selling whitebait patty sandwiches.

Other coatings with various seeds and nuts were also available). Perhaps I should have gone for something more interesting like hazelnuts

The venison was nice, and I thought it was a better option than the venison burger, since it would be easier to taste the venison.

The souvlaki wasn’t too bad; the pita was really nice and fluffy and the lamb was OK, but I wasn’t a fan of the (possibly) coleslaw-like salad. Or maybe there was too much mayo for me.
