13 Mar Platform 3 Eatery & Bar, Box Hill
Dual entryways via both Main St and the interior of Box Hill Central make Platform 3 a welcoming and easily accessible place to dine. Both a cafe and restaurant, Platform 3 is open from breakfast right through till dinner, and though it serves more Western-style dining amongst the mainly Asian eateries around here, there is still an Asian flair to appeal to the large Asian population.
The Iced Mocha is the perfect beverage for a caffeine fix in hot weather, with a strong coffee flavour that satisfies. The Hulk megashake is a thick and creamy avocado-spiked drink, crowned with a red velvet cupcake and a squirt of whipped cream. It’s not as saturated a green as our radioactive-coloured superhero, and doesn’t have an overly strong, raw avocado flavour, but there’s enough of it to stand out amongst the ice cream, giving it a pleasantly gentle avocado spin.
Baked cauliflower is smothered in a cheesy garlic sauce, which is pleasingly stringy. It does need a bit more seasoning, though nothing a dash of salt and pepper can’t fix. We later realise it’s missing the almonds, which would give the dish a good variety of texture.
Tapas are available from 4pm, one of which are the Flying Pigs. It’s an interesting dish of whole chicken wings stuffed with vermicelli, black fungus and Kurobuta, the wagyu of pork. The filling is a little dry, though the outside of the chicken wing is still moist, and the skin is coated in a slightly sweet glaze.
A pair of Duck Cigars, made with a quite a thick layer spring roll pastry, are filled with a combination of zucchini, eggplant, and capsicum stew, coriander and confit duck. Orange segments add a nice freshness to the bed of roughly sliced fennel. The cigar filling is flavoursome, with a touch of sweetness coming from the vegetables, though it’s hard to taste and find the duck.
If you can’t decide what protein to order, the Traffic Sliders are a good choice. An Angus beef patty can be had in a beetroot and poppy seed brioche bun, lime zest chicken tenderloin, avocado and wasabi mayo are found on turmeric brioche, and barramundi, capers, and dill aioli are sandwiched between a spirulina bun. The chicken could do with a tad more salt, but it is cooked well. The barramundi is also handled nicely, and the capers keeps things zingy. My pick of the three is the beef, which is flavoursome and juicy, and complemented by the mustard and cheese.
Although some of the dishes need more refinement, the concepts behind the dishes are good. Platform 3 is an option if you don’t feel like Asian food, or want to enjoy a drink from the bar.
