Chilli Con Carne Dip - Beef mince, chilli, beans, corn chips ($9.50)

Grilled corn is popping up everywhere, but this well-charred and juicy rendition is one of the tastier ones we’ve had recently. A corn basket holds a mixture of beef mince, chilli, and beans in the Chilli Con Carne Dip. Spices in the corn chips gives them a bit of earthy flavour, and the chips are rigid enough to scoop up the chilli with ease.

We try three tacos. The Chipotle Chicken is moist, and comes with cabbage, salsa verde, and pico de gallo. There’s a good chilli hit too. The pico de gallo and tang of the feta helps break up the saltiness of the Chorizo. Our favourite of the tacos is the Battered Fish, which is incredibly crunchy, and is a good match with the chipotle mayo. Although the Chorizo taco’s tortilla is a tad dry, all of them hold together nicely, even if the tortillas are a little soggier after taking photos.

The Enchilada is packed full of pulled beef, and has a thin layer of crispy cheese on top. Add in some mexican rice and you’ve got a hearty meal. The Quesadilla comes recommended by staff, and it’s a good choice. The braised beef is flavoursome, and though most people love loads of melted cheese, I can find it too heavy on the stomach if overdone. Paloma Cantina’s quesadilla is not too cheesy for me, and the tortilla is lightly charred and crispy. Perfect for warming the belly and satisfying the palate.

Paloma Cantina

Though there’s nothing out of the ordinary, there’s still plenty of tasty Mexican fare and fun times to be had at Paloma Cantina.
