26 Apr Mr Mister Cafe, Windsor
Located in the heart of Windsor, Mr Mister Cafe appears dark when first entering, but there are actually plenty of seats bathed in natural light. An indoors section towards the back benefits from a skylight, and it transitions into a heated and covered outdoors space. Coffee, sweets, breakfast items and sandwiches to-go are popular with the Chapel St early morning and lunchtime crowd.
The sudden wintery blast of chill, wind and rain had us warming up with a homely baked eggs shakshuka with chorizo, spiced tomato and capsicum sauce, melted mozzarella, grilled eggplant and zucchini. Almonds and crunchy puffed chickpeas add texture, as do the crispy pieces of grilled flatbread, which are also rigid enough to use for scooping up the ingredients.
The menu has interesting options, such as the Maple-glazed Kaiserfleisch paired with carrot puree, a pretty-in-pink poached corella pear, broccolini and poached eggs. Polenta and rosemary is baked into a square with semi-crispy crusts. There’s not too much going on, on the savoury side of things. It’s a non-dessert dish to satisfy the sweet tooths.
Lobster for brunch? Why not. The lobster roll comes with spanner crab mayonnaise, pickled daikon, apple and bouncy seaweed. Thinly sliced pickled daikon is layered on top of the creamy lobster mixture, and the long half roll is toasted and buttered. The crushed pea, miso and quinoa sushi bites are fresh with a bit of spicy zinginess to them.
The menu Mr Mister has a variety of options, including quite creative ones, and the space is like a little escape from the busyness of Chapel Street.
