Melt Pizza, Windsor

After undertaking a AVPN-certified course and work experience in Naples, Dan and Elice have brought their skills back to Melbourne to serve us authentic pizza Napoletana. The site previously housed Pizza Piazza, but after running it for a few months, they’ve transformed it into MELT in order to capture the market for good quality pizza at not-too-lofty prices. MELT has a very nice, modern fit-out including an open-air courtyard area at the back and also a more private room, which would be great for gatherings.

Their concept was ‘down-the-line’ wood-fired pizza – in a style not too dissimilar to places like Subway and Mad Mex, customers can create a pizza to their own liking by moving along the counter and selecting what they want. If you feel overwhelmed by all the possibilities presented by the bases and topping ingredients, not to worry – the staff are happy to provide some guidance. Alternatively, there are pizza ‘classics’ on the menu that can be chosen instead. If you’re not in a pizza mood, MELT also serves panuozzos (wood-fired sandwiches), salads, sides and drinks.

San Daniele - San Daniele prosciutto, rocket, fresh mozzarella, crushed tomato, extra virgin olive oil pizza ($15)

And what good quality pizza it is! Using fresh, local ingredients including free-range meat and dough that’s made fresh every day, pizza is cooked for 2 minutes inside the 400C oven kept from the old restaurant. Today we went with the San Daniele, which was a pizza with San Daniele prosciutto, rocket, fresh mozzarella, crushed tomato and extra virgin olive oil. The crispy, thin, light and slightly spongy base had nice charred bits at the bottom and wasn’t overloaded with toppings and sauces; the balance allowed for a better appreciation of both the wonderful pizza base and quality ingredients on top.

Superfood Salad - Oven-roasted sweet potato, beetroot, broccoli, red quinoa, white quinoa, red rice, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, almond flakes w. yoghurt and tahini dressing ($13)

We also tried the Superfood salad, containing oven-roasted sweet potato, beetroot, broccoli, red quinoa, white quinoa, red rice, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and almond flakes. Although they had run out of the yoghurt and tahini dressing that normally accompanies it, we were given the vincotto dressing, which is usually partnered with the Rocket and Parmesan salad. I really enjoyed the variety of textures and flavours in the salad and the vincotto dressing still went very well with it.

Salted Caramel Gelato ($4)

Salted Caramel Gelato ($4)

Gelato is supplied by 7 Apples in St Kilda, and one of today’s flavours was salted caramel; it was rich, smooth and not overly sweet.

MELT’s pizzas are great value considering the quality on offer and their neat, casual setting provides a great destination for all sorts of occasions.
