Maha East - Spiced lamb borek, raisin jam & olive ($8 ea)

Maha East, Windsor

Biggie Smalls Windsor is no more. Shane Delia has replaced his Chapel Street kebab shop with Maha East, the fun and casual cousin of his Maha flagship.

It is still Maha, so the share-style menu is Middle Eastern-inspired, and it boasts a strong wine and cocktail list. We begin with velvety Hummus topped with a sprinkling of chicken mince, chopped macadamia and fried sage. The bread stays hot and crisp for a surprisingly long time, so we can nibble on it over the course of the dinner and it still tastes fresh. It is however, also delicious, and it’s difficult to refrain from eating it all at once.

One of my favourites from the night is the Spiced Lamb Borek. Potential heaviness is offset by sweetness from raisin jam. If you love taramasalata, you’ll be pleased to know that their Fried Bun has a huge dollop of it hiding inside for your eating pleasure. The Crumbed Pork Cutlet is cooked well, and comes with smoked eggplant, smoked almond and lemon jus.

We can’t leave without also trying their Peanut Butter & Dark Chocolate Tart. Chocolate and nuts are a classic combination and it’s hard to go wrong.

Having booked our table a few months in advance in order to squeeze in amongst the end-of-year celebration crowd, anticipation was quite high. Maha East did not disappoint.
