Madame Sousou, Fitzroy

Instead of going for lunch today I decided to go for a heavy breakfast at Madame Sousou. I had already decided which item I wanted, which was the Funghi A La Parisienne (toasted brioche w. buttered mushrooms, smashed avocado and goat cheese rondelle) with poached egg ($19.80 + $1.10).

I’m not usually one for brioche because I find it a bit rich for a bread, but in this case it helped to add a soft-fluffy texture and slight sweetness to each mouthful. It wasn’t that toasted, but even if it were, it would have become soggy from the avocado anyway. I was expecting the buttered mushrooms to be a dark brown mass of sliced cup mushrooms, but was pleased to find a decent-sized mound of chunky, large mushroom pieces (possibly portobello) instead. The smashed avocado had a hint of citrus juice, combining with the tartness from the goat’s cheese to balance out the flavours and create some freshness.

The egg was slightly overdone, but there was still enough runny yolk to spread slightly into the avocado.

I spent more than I normally would for a breakfast, but it did last me for pretty much the whole day. Later as I was walking back to the bus stop I realised they’d only charged me $19, which is the same price as on the website menu. I wondered if there was a recent price increase that hadn’t been reflected on the till system yet. Whatever the case, it was cheaper and much more satisfying than my dinner last night.
