A good bowl of noodle soup is one of life’s simple pleasures. Smooth, slurpy noodles, and soul-warming broth is such a comfort, even when the weather is warm. At least it is for me.

Lanzhou Beef Noodle Bar sought to bring authentic Lanzhou beef noodles to Australia, prepared using traditional methods. The hand-pulled noodles are made in store and you can watch the chefs expertly making them while you eagerly await your order.

Given their name, you might be able to guess that their signature dishes involve beef. There are some that come with sliced beef belly, and others that have braised beef. The Handmade Noodle with Slow Cooked Beef Belly doesn’t come with chilli, and the broth is very clean tasting, yet flavoursome. Service is fast, which certainly helps move the queues along, and servings are large too so it’s pretty good value for money. Most of the noodle dishes come with the option to choose one of seven different thicknesses of noodle, and the amount of other ingredients including chilli, coriander and leek, can be customised as well.

Apart from beef noodle soup, there are dry noodle and vegetarian options, such as the soy bean noodle ‘zha jiang mian’, with eggs and soybeans being used instead of minced meat. Available sides include dumplings, shredded potatoes (that still have some bite), noodle-like bean curd, marinated eggs, and extra beef slices.

My personal favourite of the noodles would have to be the Homemade Braised Beef Noodle Soup. Can’t beat the satisfaction of melt-in-the-mouth braised beef, and it’s a dish I’d happily return for. Lanzhou Beef Noodle Bar is expanding into the suburbs, so hopefully there’ll be one opening near you!
